Pokémon TCG Prerelease: What Awaits You in Chaos Rising – Starting May 9th

Pokemon TCG Prerelease: Was dich bei Chaos Rising erwartet – ab dem 9. Mai

Two more days. Starting May 9, 2026, local game stores will open their doors for the Chaos Rising Prereleases – and if you've never attended such an event, you're missing out on one of the most relaxed ways to get into active TCG play. A Pokemon TCG Prerelease is neither a tournament nor just a product sales event: it's a format of its own, with its own rules, its own pace, and content you won't find anywhere else. What exactly happens, what's inside, and whether it's worth it for collectors and non-players – all explained here.

What exactly is a Prerelease?

A Prerelease is an official Play! Pokémon event that typically takes place in the two weeks before a new set's regular release. For the Chaos Rising Prerelease, this means you'll be playing with cards that officially hit stores on May 22, 2026 – up to two weeks earlier than everyone else.

The format is called Limited or Sealed Deck: Each participant receives a Build & Battle Box and builds a playable 40-card deck from its contents within about 30 minutes. No outside cards, no expensive preparation – just what's in the box. This makes the playing field much more even than in regular tournaments, which also makes Prereleases interesting for people who never play tournaments otherwise.

What's in the Chaos Rising Build & Battle Box?

Each box contains:

  • A complete 40-card deck, pre-constructed and ready to play – since the Mega Evolution era, these decks are no longer semi-random, but fully built around the included promo card
  • One of four exclusive promo cards with a Prerelease stamp: Delphox, Ampharos, Crobat, or Goodra – which one you get is random
  • Four booster packs from the Chaos Rising expansion
  • A TCG Live code card for the digital version of the game

The four promo cards at a glance

Each of the four promos has its own theme and synergy with the included deck:

Delphox – Fire Will Ability: Once Delphox is active, you draw one card per turn. Very consistent deck, good for beginners.

Ampharos – Synchro Pulse: Deals up to 220 damage if your hand size matches your opponent's. Combo play with Judge and other hand-size Trainer cards.

Crobat – Classic speed type with Confusion mechanic. Aggressive deck that builds early pressure.

Goodra – Slimy Sliding Ability: Prevents your opponent from retreating their active Pokémon. In a format without free switching, this is a huge tactical advantage.

How does a Prerelease event work?

The typical process once you arrive:

  1. Registration & Box Distribution – You pay the participation fee (varies by store, usually around 20–30 Euros) and receive your Build & Battle Box.
  2. Deck Building (approx. 30 minutes) – You open all contents, sort by type, and build a 40-card deck. Basic Energy cards are provided by the store if you need more.
  3. Swiss Rounds – Typically three rounds in Swiss format, Best-of-One, with four prize cards instead of the usual six. Shorter games, more relaxed pace.
  4. Prize Boosters – At the end, all participants who complete the event receive three additional Chaos Rising booster packs as a participation prize.

The deck can be taken home after the event – including all cards pulled from the boosters.

Is a Prerelease worth it for collectors?

Yes – and for a specific reason: The four promo cards are exclusive. They bear a Prerelease stamp and are not available in regular retail. For complete collectors who want every version of every card, there's no way around it.

In addition, four Chaos Rising boosters are already included in the entry fee, plus three more as a participation prize. Seven packs for around 20–30 Euros before the official release is mathematically solid – and you get an exclusive promo on top.

If you want to build the complete Chaos Rising collection, you'll otherwise miss the Prerelease promo. For master set collectors, the Prerelease is therefore a must, not an option.

Is a Prerelease worth it for non-players?

Honest answer: If you truly don't want to play at all, a Prerelease is only marginally worthwhile as a pure pack-opening event. Seven packs are seven packs – the real added value lies in the promo card and the atmosphere.

However, for anyone who has never played a game but is curious: The Prerelease format with the pre-constructed 40-card deck is the best possible introduction. No need for your own collection, no preparation, no expectation of a Tier 1 build. You open, you build, you play – and you do so against people who all have the same setup.

How do I find a Prerelease near me?

You can find participating stores in your region using the official Play! Pokémon Event Locator at pokemon.com/en. Simply enter your postcode or city, set the period to May 9–17, and see who's offering events nearby.

Important: Not all stores have the same dates. Some offer multiple Prerelease tournaments over the two weeks, others only one. If in doubt, inquire with the store beforehand whether registration is necessary – spaces are limited at some events.

After the Prerelease: What to do with the cards?

The pre-constructed deck and the cards you pull are yours. Useful next steps:

  • Protect the promo card: Toploader or semi-rigid sleeve immediately after the event – Prerelease promos with a stamp are delicate and should be stored in a dry, light-protected place.
  • Document booster pulls: If you're keeping track of your pulls for the secondary market, note the condition and cards directly after the event.
  • Keep or break down the deck: The Prerelease deck contains useful Trainer cards and basic cards – not everything is bulk. It's worth quickly checking the Trainer list before dismantling it.

If you want to complete the full set after the Prerelease, you'll find boosters and displays directly at CardsRfun from May 22 onwards.

FAQ

When do the Chaos Rising Prereleases take place? The Chaos Rising Prerelease events run from May 9 to May 17, 2026, at participating local game stores. You can find participating stores using the Event Locator at pokemon.com/en.

What do I get at a Chaos Rising Prerelease? You receive a Build & Battle Box with a ready-to-play 40-card deck, one of four exclusive promo cards (Delphox, Ampharos, Crobat, or Goodra), and four Chaos Rising booster packs. Upon completing the event, you typically receive three more boosters as a participation prize.

Do I need to know how to play the Pokémon TCG to participate in the Prerelease? No. The Prerelease format with a pre-constructed 40-card deck is ideal for beginners. Stores provide Basic Energy cards and help with deck adjustment. The rules for the Prerelease format are simpler than standard tournaments.

Are Prerelease promos more valuable than regular cards? Prerelease promos bear a stamp and are not available outside of Prerelease events. For complete collectors, they are essential. Their market value varies depending on the Pokémon's popularity, but for popular designs, it is often higher than that of the regular version of the card.

What happens if I can't attend a Prerelease? Build & Battle Boxes will also be available in regular retail from the official release date (May 22, 2026) – however, without the Prerelease promo, which is only distributed during the official event period.
